Jewish Heritage Tour

Friday Arrival—9 nights

A nine night tour starting on Friday focusing on sites relating to Jewish heritage incorporating Tel Aviv, Caesaria, Haifa, Acre, the mystical city of Safed, The Golan Heights, Tiberias, the old and new cities of Jerusalem including the Western Wall and tunnels and the ultra-orthodox Mea Shearim, Yad Vashem – the Holocaust Memorial, the Dead Sea and Massada and more.

We will be staying at hotels in three main bases: Tel Aviv, Kibbutz Lavi guesthouse in the Galilee and Jerusalem. Our accommodation will be on bed and breakfast basis apart from the kibbutz guesthouse which will be on half board basis.

Friday

Ben Gurion Airport / Tel Aviv
Arrival at Ben Gurion Airport, where you will be met by our representative and transferred to your hotel.
Overnight: Tel Aviv.

Sunday

Caesarea / Haifa / Acre / Rosh Hanikra
We will travel north to Caesarea, formerly the region’s capital during the Roman era. We will visit the archaeological excavations of the crusaders’ city, the aqueduct and the amphitheatre has been renovated to its past magnificence and today serves as a venue for entertainment performances. We continue onwards to Haifa for an overview of the city and bay area from Mount Carmel and visit “AF AL PI CHEN”, the Naval Museum dedicated to the illegal immigration to Israel during the control of the British Mandate . Our journey will now take us to Acre where we will visit the ancient port and local souk. Our tour today will end in the far north of Israel at Rosh Hanikra where we will descend by cable car to the limestone caverns below.

Monday

Safed / Golan Heights / Upper Galilee
Our first stop today is Safed, center of mysticism and Kabala. We will visit the Joseph Caro and the Ha’ ari synagogues, the most significant synagogues in Safed. Take time to wander around the Artists’ Quarter. We will leave Safed by 4×4 vehicles and experience a Jeep tour to the foot of the Golan Heights. We will proceed upwards to the Golan Heights and see an overview of the town of Kuneitra and the Syrian territory from the observation point. Onwards to Tel Facher, a former Syrian army camp. The next stop of our tour is the Banias Springs and then we will continue to Tel-Hai with its “Roaring Lion” Monument and discover about the valiant fight of Josef Trumpeldor and his compatriots in 1920. We will get together with a member of the Kibbutz and gain knowledge of their distinctive way of life.

Tuesday

Beit Shean / Beit Alpha / Gan Hashlosha
Our tour today will begin in Tiberias with a visit to the tomb of the Rambam. We will carry on to Beit Shean, also known as “Scythopolis”, the most significant archaeological site in Israel with amazing excavations from both the Roman and Byzantine eras. We will next visit Beit Alpha and admire the extraordinary mosaic floor of a synagogue from the Byzantine era. We will proceed to Gan Hashlosha, (Sachne) and enjoy bathing in the refreshing fresh water springs at the base of Mount Gilboa, where King Saul was killed during the battle against the Philistines. We will make our way to Jerusalem through the Jordan Valley. Our final stop today will be on Mount Scopus where you will receive a blessing on entering Jerusalem.

Wednesday

Jerusalem: Jerusalem (The Old City of Jerusalem)
Our tour today of the Old City of Jerusalem starts at the Tomb of King David on Mount Zion. Wander along the Cardo, the ancient Roman street and visit the four Sepharadic synagogues reinstated after the Six Day War in 1967 in the Jewish Quarter. We will take a tour of the Western Wall Tunnels (Kotel Tunnels) and the Davidson Center. Stroll through the alleyways of the Arab Souk, and via the Jaffa Gate to the David Citadel Museum and see the ancient ruins Jerusalem from the time of the First Temple and onwards.

Thursday

Jerusalem: The New City
We will start our day at the Western Wall and enjoy seeing the Bar-Mitzvah celebration ceremonies. Onwards to Mea Shearim and discover about the distinctive way of life of the ultra orthodox communities. Drive to Mount Herzl, the military cemetery and Yad Vashem, the Holocaust Memorial. Our last stop will be at Ammunition Hill, former Jordanian army trenches, taken by the Israeli Army in the Six Day War and transformed into a national memorial and museum. Drive by Israel’s Parliament — the Knesset — and see the huge Menorah with the biblical symbols. Our last stop will be at the Israel Museum with a visit to the Shrine of the Book where the amazing Dead Sea Scrolls are exhibited as well as the Holyland model of 2nd Temple period Jerusalem.

Friday

Qumran / Massada / Dead Sea
We will travel to the Dead Sea via the Judean desert. We will visit Qumran where the Dead Sea Scrolls were found. Onwards to Massada ascending upwards by cable car to tour the ancient fortifications including ruins of the walls, palaces, synagogue, the bathhouses etc. Back down again by cable car. We will stop for lunch and Spa facilities in one of the top hotels in the Dead Sea area.
